Global Talent Visa

The Global Talent visa provides a fast-track immigration route for individuals with recognised expertise in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology. It replaced the Tier 1 (Exceptional Talent) visa in February 2020, and is open to leaders and potential leaders across:

• Academia or research
• Arts and culture
• Digital technology
• Architecture
• Fashion design
• Film and television
• Science
• Engineering
• Humanities
• Medicine

The visa is typically granted for up to five years, with the option to extend for a further one to five years. Alternatively, holders can apply for settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain, or ILR) after three years as a recognised leader, or five years as a potential leader.

Positioned above most other UK work visas, the Global Talent route comes with a distinctive set of benefits. Holders can:

• Come to the UK without meeting an English language requirement or needing a job offer
• Work for a UK company
• Be self-employed
• Become a company director
• Change or stop their work without notifying the Home Office
• Bring a partner and children as dependants
• Travel abroad and return freely
• Apply for ILR after just three years, if recognised as a leader

Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for a Global Talent visa, applicants must:

• Be aged 18 or over
• Be a leader or potential leader in academia or research, arts and culture, or digital technology
• Be endorsed by an approved endorsing body

Unlike most UK visa routes, there's no salary or English language requirement.

Business Endorsement

Choosing an Endorsing Body

Central to a successful Global Talent application is endorsement from an approved body confirming the applicant's status as a leader or potential leader — unless the applicant instead qualifies through an eligible award (see the Prestigious Prizes route below). The relevant endorsing body depends on the applicant's field:

Arts endorsing bodies:

• Arts Council England
• British Fashion Council
• Royal Institute of British Architects
• Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (Exceptional Talent applications only)

Digital technology:

• Tech Nation

Science, engineering, humanities, and medicine:

• The British Academy
• The Royal Academy of Engineering
• The Royal Society
• UK Research and Innovation (UKRI)

What Endorsing Bodies Consider

Academia or research. Endorsing bodies assess whether an applicant is a leader or potential leader in science, medicine, engineering, or the humanities. Applicants generally need one of the following:

• An eligible academic or research job offer, either directing or leading a research or innovation project, or holding responsibility for academic, research, or innovation leadership
• An individual fellowship approved by the Royal Society (science and medicine), the British Academy (humanities), or the Royal Academy of Engineering
• A research grant approved by UKRI

Applicants who don't fit these routes may still be able to apply through peer review by an endorsing body.

Arts and culture. Applicants need to satisfy the relevant endorsing body that they're a leader or potential leader in combined arts, dance, literature, music, theatre, or visual arts; architecture; fashion design; or film and television (including animation, post-production, and visual effects). Exact criteria vary by specialism — for example, those in combined arts, dance, literature, music, theatre, or visual arts generally need to show:

• Regular work in their field over the past five years
• Published or performed work considered "outstanding" by Arts Council England
• International recognition in at least two countries, if applying as a leader

Digital technology. Applicants need endorsement as a leader or potential leader in fintech, gaming, cybersecurity, or artificial intelligence, assessed by Tech Nation against "exceptional talent" or "exceptional promise" criteria. This typically involves evidence of:

• A track record of innovation through founding or holding a senior role at a product-led digital technology company
• A track record of innovation while working in a new digital field or concept as an employee
• Contributions to the wider digital technology sector, such as mentoring or collaborative projects
• Technical, commercial, or entrepreneurial contributions made while founding or working at a product-led technology company
• Research that has been published or endorsed by an expert in the field

How to Apply

The general application process involves:

1. Applying for endorsement from the relevant approved body. Each endorsing body has its own process and criteria for assessing leaders and potential leaders, and applicants are generally expected to demonstrate a strong body of work alongside support from established experts in their field. An endorsement fee of £561 applies
2. Once endorsed — or where an eligible award exempts the applicant from endorsement — completing the relevant online application form, which differs depending on whether the applicant is switching visas within the UK or applying from abroad
3. Verifying identity, either through a biometric appointment at a visa application centre or via the "UK Immigration: ID Check" app
4. Paying the application fee of £205, with each dependant paying a separate fee of £766
5. Paying the Immigration Health Surcharge for the length of the visa (currently £1,035 per person, per year)

Decisions are typically issued within 3 weeks for applications made outside the UK, or 8 weeks for those switching within the UK — though this can take longer where further evidence or an interview is required.

The Prestigious Prizes Route

Applicants who hold certain eligible awards can apply for a Global Talent visa without going through endorsement. Qualifying awards include:

• Architecture (e.g., the Pritzker Prize)
• Arts and culture (e.g., the Booker Prize, Olivier Award)
• Digital technology (e.g., the Turing Award)
• Film and television (e.g., BAFTA, Golden Globe, Grammy)
• Science, engineering, humanities, and medicine (e.g., the Nobel Prize)

Extending the Visa

Towards the end of the current visa period, holders can apply to extend — or apply for settlement if eligible — provided the original endorsing body hasn't withdrawn its endorsement, and the applicant can show they've earned income from their expertise while in the UK. There's no set minimum income for this, but suitable evidence includes:

• Payslips
• An employer letter confirming earnings
• Personal bank or building society statements showing payments from an employer or a company the applicant directs
• An HMRC tax statement showing declarable taxable income for the relevant tax year
• An HMRC-produced employer document, such as a P60
• An HMRC tax return
• Dividend vouchers

The current extension fee is £766 per person, plus the Immigration Health Surcharge of £1,035 per year.

Route to ILR

Global Talent visa holders planning to remain in the UK long term can apply for ILR:

• After three years of living and working in the UK, for those recognised as a leader
• After five years, for those recognised as a potential leader

Applicants must not have spent more than 180 days outside the UK in any year during their qualifying period.

ILR brings significant advantages — no further visa applications, greater flexibility around employment and study, and no ongoing Immigration Health Surcharge. After holding ILR for a year, applicants become eligible to apply for British citizenship.
